Once Apice had a successful 3D scan in hand, our engineer worked with them via Zoom to design the crate insert. The design was optimized to distribute forces evenly, while avoiding contact on fragile points. Cutouts were also added for easy handling.
The insert was milled in Zotefoam, which is non-reactive and chemically stable for safe long-term storage.
Apice Group, an Italian art logistics company, needed to create a foam cavity for Testa di Vecchio, a polychrome terracotta sculpture dating to the 1480s. The work is in the collection of the Galleria Estensi in Modena.
They reached out to us to propose an international collaboration.
We loaned them our 3D scanner, and conducted a remote training session via Zoom, to ensure that they were comfortable with the technology before going to the museum. We then provided on-call remote tech support while their team was on-site.
